Chapter Ten

Traps Set in Motion

“I can’t believe they found us.” Grady grinned in response to Chris’s and Vivian’s cleverness after Ethan relayed the mental messages he’d just received. “I’m not so bad at choosing friends, after all.”

“See, she didn’t abandon you. Just needed some space.” Ethan offered a reassuring smile which faltered upon the grim expression clouding Vincent’s features as he rejoined them. It was easy to guess what had caused his upset.

“You…failed to mention Karen has a boyfriend.”

“Yeah…” Ethan couldn’t hide the guilt creeping into his voice. He supposed it was unfair to try to send his father in for a reunion without a proper relationship status update. But after hearing Chris profess his love, Ethan realized his selfishness.

Thankfully, his father seemed to assume he’d withheld information for a different reason. “I still would have helped you. You’re my son.”

“Yeah.” Ethan nodded, glad at the reprieve from an explanation. “Yeah, of course. I know.” He shrugged as if to say, Silly me. What was I thinking?

Vincent cleared his throat. “I don’t think now is the best time to see her. Which sounds insane to say out loud considering how long I’ve wanted nothing more than that.” He gave a tiny pained laugh.

Mercury and Marcus had rejoined them by this point, always game for gossip.

“Well, there’s more than enough to keep you busy.” Mercury, privy to Chris’s message by way of telepathic eavesdropping, got right to the point. “One of you needs to pay a visit to our friends at the Order, and Ethan isn’t exactly Magellan when it comes to following coordinates.”

“What?” Ethan was less offended by the slight than by the idea of sending the Sandman right into their stronghold. “No way! He can’t go there.”

“He can and he should,” Mercury replied with finality.

“He’s right.” Vincent surprised them all by agreeing. “They’ll be expecting you. Not me. And I know how they operate.”

“But what if they capture you? You’re the one they’re really after,” Ethan reminded him.

“I’ll make sure they don’t,” Marcus interjected.

“That will be hard considering you won’t be there,” Vincent stated in a tone clearly meant to warn him he should backtrack on whatever he was planning.

“You can blip around all you’d like and throw sand in their eyes or whatever it is you creatures do but when it comes to stealing highly guarded magical objects, you’d be remiss not to utilize my expertise.”

“The only time I’ve been on a mission with you, you tried to kill me.” Vincent glared.

Marcus shrugged the accusation off. “People can change, you know.”

“I must say, the thought of the two of you having to work side by side both terrifies and arouses me,” Mercury admitted. “While I can see a number of drastic ways this could go sideways, I have to agree it’s probably our best chance.”

“You expect me to trust him?” Vincent refused to even glance in Marcus’s direction.

“No. I expect you to help him,” Mercury ordered. “If anyone can steal and destroy that thing, it’s Marcus. All you have to do is transport him in and back out again in one piece.
